Articles and Essays I Recommend

Sometimes a particular article is so useful to me that I feel like everyone should read it. Those go in here.

Jason Fried of 37Signals on Business, Focus, and Avoiding Interruption

Read this immediately. Focus is at the core of everything I've ever done that's been successful. Attention is like a train and interruption will derail it. In order to get real work done, you must have focused blocks of time that aren't interrupted by anything (not phone calls, not coffee breaks, not trips to the bathroom, nothing!) Do whatever you can to spread the idea that it's rude to interrupt someone else unless you absolutely need their attention immediately.

Vim

Vim is a text-editing masterpiece with a learning cliff that will frustrate you like you have never been frustrated but reward you in the end, if you can stick with it. Try these vim related articles:

Configuring Vim Right by Stephen Bach
Explainations of the most important setting changes to be made to your vimrc file. Read this after you've played with vim a little bit.
Configuration stuff, including recommended plugins, from Jamis Buck
I haven't yet tried all of the stuff recommended here but NERD_tree is fantastic, a must have.
Fear not, more articles are sitting in my bookmarks waiting patiently to be added to this list. Until I get around to it, you can find something else to do on the front page.
